I despise Donald Trump.
And yet, I am frustrated that Joe Biden’s faults seem to be dismissed by the left. His serious memory loss and old age are ignored, despite serious concerns. His breach of norms regarding classified documents—while qualitatively and categorically different from former President Trump’s—are treated as no serious thing.
The answer to me is actually relatively simple: Joe Biden should be disqualified from running for President. I don’t know who has the power to do so. Perhaps it needs to be the supreme court. But my hope is that someone will—and in so doing, will also signal to the country that Donald Trump needs an exactly similar consequence for his own serious problems.
We can do much better than Trump v Biden. Frankly, it would be hard not to do better. I know there is some serious political will to find someone—anyone—who could do better than these two men.
But that’s not reason enough to do it. You don’t do it because you want something that suits you better, you do it because it’s the right thing. In this case, because they both violated serious laws around misconduct regarding classified documents. The left can grapple with losing an incumbent and make peace with it because at least Donald Trump is off the ballot. The right can lick their wounds and elect someone else on a wave of indignation that everyone knows is mostly ginned-up anyway.
I don’t think it’s going to happen, and it would be brand new legal territory if it did.
But I wish someone with the right authority would disqualify them both.
